1) What are the challenges of using a large quantity of one item to create an artwork?
The biggest challenge I'd think is to figure out an arrangement that isn't dull, something that has interest and not just repetitive. With using just a single material, I think it'd be easy to make some thing that looks "flat"-a sculpture with no sense of movement or very much dimension.
2) How did you express movement in your sculpture?
Through staggering and varying where I glued the sticks and the spaces between them. The three swooshy sticks reflect some movement, too. I like the swooshy sticks. The bottom looks like its 'clashing' but the top looks more flowing, I think.
3) Critique your work: what worked well and what did you struggle with? Were you happy with the end result? Why or why not?
Hot glue was only way I thought of that would work best to glue the sticks together. Hot glue is hard to work with, it drips and goes where it shouldn't on the artwork, it leaves strings everywhere, and it's hot.
I know sticks aren't very anything especially interesting but I wanted to do something that looked more natural and organic. It kinda of reminds of log jams on rivers which are pretty neat to see.
I'm happy with the end result. It reminds me of hiking. My mom said it reminds her of a ship, my dad says it looks like a creature or something. All are things that I think are cool.
